I designed a full graduate curriculum, mapping system, and visual models for an interdisciplinary graduate program integrating education, technology, and design—Johns Hopkins University's Digital Age Learning and Educational Technology (DALET) program.
The system organizes the program’s core structure into a clear, intuitive model that communicates depth, breadth, and pathways through a unified visual language.
The Need
The program needed branding and a way to communicate a complex, interdisciplinary structure in a format that students, faculty, and administrators could understand.
Learners had a mix of required courses and electives, but it wasn’t clear when specific classes would be offered or which department was offering them. As a result, planning was difficult, and students often missed registration opportunities, delaying program completion or requiring waivers.
Without a cohesive model, the experience felt like a disconnected set of courses rather than a unified learner journey.
Process and Outcome
I met with experts, reviewed the existing curriculum, and sorted the program’s offerings into departments. This revealed the deep structure of the content—students could either dive deeply into one area or build breadth across multiple domains. The new design architecture mirrors this insight. Using that structure, I redesigned the curriculum to give learners clear, intentional choices aligned with their desired outcomes.
The new design offers 12 distinct learner journeys, making program planning more predictable for the Director and more aligned with student needs. The final logo compresses the meaning of the entire framework into a simple, recognizable mark that builds the story into the mark.
